What a great use of an old road. It's beautiful out here. I was here for a 911 memorial race called the Freedom Run. It was 9.11 miles. It was a great place for a straight in turn around straight back run. The road is really level which is good in the hips. Also I saw a bear crossing the road. At first I thought " Why is that person crawling across the street" then it clicked. I started yelling BEAR BEAR BEAR as loud as I could and picked up my pace. Because I heard they are scared of loud noises. Everything went great. Would recommend to anyone for a peaceful distance run.
This was an interesting little 5 mile walk. Very quiet, never saw a bear, was some interesting signage along the way telling some history. Really enjoyed the walk.
I have walked the Dismal Swamp almost daily for the last 11 years. It is my special place. But I won't be selfish. You are welcome to it.
First time using this trail, a enjoyed it especially being a clean bathroom about 3 1/2 miles in on the trail and clean bathroom at start. Plenty of parking just be sure to be prepared with insect repellent as the biting flies can be very aggressive. I was the only one walking the day I went, most others were cycling which with a paved trail from end to end it is very good for this.
Great place to walk, ride a bike, enjoy nature. You may spot a bear, that's always exciting and scary.
