When they run out of adult-sized life vests, just hand out kids' vests and tell you that you have to wear them because "it's the law." When asked how you should fasten the life vest that's too small for you, the "ranger" (who takes himself VERY seriously) says, "I don't care that it doesn't work, just put it on."
Variety of trails to walk. Some trails take a little more effort, or take the trails which are flatter.
Beautiful Park, beautiful scenery. Went kayaking with family, really enjoyed it. Very peaceful. Too much to see and do in one day. Definitely will visit again soon before summer is over. Can't wait to see what it looks like in Fall when the leaves start to turn autumn colors.
It would be nice to know that the staff cared as much about people's safety as they do law compliance.
Park was nice, but do not put your car in overflow Parking and don't bother calling the camp security numbers posted everywhere if you need assistance. They locked up the overflow parking at night until 0800 or 0900 in the morning and didn't tell us but did not allow me to park at the camp site because there's a 2 car limit. Was informed there was 24-7 campsite security so when I saw the gate locked at 0630 I called the camp security and the person who answered was very inexperienced, not on the campsite, and took an hour for a different officer to inform me they couldn't unlock the gate and they had no idea who to call to open it, comforting that their security isn't able to get to you off hours. Had to call Chesapeake PD to come out and help me get out of the campsite, was very late to work, had a horrible way to start my Birthday, and I'm out $100 from the experience. So if you need help off hours you will need to call the PD for help and don't put a vehicle in overflow if you want the opportunity to use it on your own terms.
Snacks and drinks can be purchased at the Rangers building while viewing interesting features inside as well. A great place to walk your dog too.
Generally family friendly, pretty clean.
I have frequented this park over the years as we live down the road. I have helped with many Eagle Scout projects here, fished, camped, hiked, canoed, kayaked, biked, and had a wedding reception here. The trails are swampy, really scenic, and full of nature. Boots are best. Fishing is a hit and a miss, but iv caught perch, bass, crappie, sunfish and bluegill myself... and heard of a few others and seen a few snakes. Its really rural and a good time but be prepared to ruff it a bit as it is no city trail!
Paddle boats are a reasonable cost and fun for all ages. Picnic tables are available for eating lunches or snacks..
You can walk down to the river and enjoy the relaxation of viewing it while sitting on the dock which also has a kayak launch section.
